Gender Without Borders

“As a woman I have no country. As a woman I want no country. As a woman, my country is the whole world.” ― Virginia Woolf

I think to some people this is a big, messy, grey world but at least there are some sharp distinctions, like the distinctions between gender and sexual orientation and those are just lines that should always be hard lines. But saying that simplicity is natural is idiotic because the most natural thing in the world is complexity, and gender and sexual orientation are proven over and over again to not be firm lines. The whole world is grey and if you just appreciate that, if you just understand and appreciate that, it’s beautiful.

If a survivor of domestic violence uses a gun to warn an attacker, not kill him, and that survivor now faces a prison term of twenty years, then what purpose does Stand Your Ground serve?

Melissa Harris-Perry on the case of Marissa Alexander, a mother of three, who fired a warning shot into her kitchen ceiling trying to keep her abusive husband away. No one was hurt, but she now faces up to twenty years in prison. (via thenationmagazine)

Take sides. Neutrality helps the oppressor, never the victim. Silence encourages the tormentor, never the tormented.

I think neutrality is over-rated.

I was able to make a quick visit recently to one of my very favourite American cities: Savannah, Georgia.  The whole place reeks of old money, fabulous antiques, voodoo, pirate lore and Southern cooking!

Two absolute ‘musts’ in Savannah are a walking ghost tour (it’s reputed to be the most haunted city in America) and a tour of Mercer House, where so much of Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil took place.
